Every turn starts from nothing

The model keeps no state between runs. It is not sitting there between your messages, waiting. Each time you press send, the app builds a fresh page — system prompt, then every earlier message, then your new one — and hands the whole thing over as if for the first time. The feeling of a continuous conversation is produced entirely by resending the transcript.

A common misconception

Commonly believed: It is learning about me as we talk, and will know me better tomorrow.

Actually: It is not changing at all. The numbers inside are frozen while you use it. What looks like memory is one of two things: the transcript being resent inside the window, or a product feature that saves notes about you in an ordinary database and quietly pastes them into the next prompt. Both are text on the page. Neither is the model changing.

Two consequences you can actually feel

First, long conversations get slower and more expensive, because the entire history is re-read on every turn. Second, once the conversation outgrows the window the earliest part gets dropped — which is why a model can forget a rule you set twenty messages ago while sounding completely certain about everything else.

You tell a model your name, then open a brand new chat and ask for it. Why does it usually not know?

Answer: A new chat is a new page, and your name was on the old one. There is nothing to forget, because nothing was ever stored inside the model. A new chat means a new prompt, and unless the product deliberately pastes your name into it, your name is simply not there to read.
